Chapter 2: The Message on His Phone

My son reached for the transfer document, but I pulled it back.
“You were going to give us the house?” his wife whispered.
“I was,” I said.
“Until you told me what my place in this family was worth.”
Her face reddened.
“He said the house would be ours by the end of the month.
We’ve already made plans.”
“What plans?”
My son stood so quickly his chair scraped the floor.
“Mom, please.
Let me explain privately.”
“No,” his wife snapped.
“You promised we could sell this place and use the money to pay everything off.”
I looked at my son.
“You planned to sell my house?”
“It wasn’t like that,” he said.
“I thought once you signed—”
His phone lit up on the table.
He grabbed for it, but his wife was faster.
She read the message, and all the color drained from her face.
“What did you do?” she whispered.
I took the phone from her shaking hand.
The message was from someone listed as Mr.
Reeves.
The buyer is getting suspicious.
I need the owner’s signature tonight, or the deal is off.
I slowly raised my eyes to my son.
“Why does a buyer think my house is for sale?”
He opened his mouth, but before he could answer, the doorbell rang.
My son froze.
Then he said the one thing that made his wife step away from him.
“Mom…
whatever happens, don’t open that door.”
