Chapter 2: The Photograph

Part 2 ⬇️

I found Emily hiding behind the couch, her small arms wrapped around that blue bag like it was the only thing keeping her safe.

"Daddy," she whispered.

"She said you wouldn't believe me."

My hands were shaking as I knelt down beside her.

"I believe you, sweetheart.

I believe every word."

That's when Vanessa appeared in the doorway.

"Daniel." Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

"Emily has a very active imagination.

You know that."

"I saw what you did to her."

She stepped closer and lowered her voice.

"And I saw what your brother did before he disappeared.

So did Emily's mother.

That's why the recording exists."

I went completely still.

"That's right," Vanessa said, her eyes never leaving mine.

"Your late wife didn't make that recording to protect Emily.

She made it to protect herself — from Ethan.

And from you."

Emily tugged at my sleeve.

"Daddy.

There's something inside the bag.

Mama put it there for you.

She said only you would know what it meant."

I reached into the blue bag with trembling hands — and pulled out a photograph I had never seen before.

In it stood Ethan, Vanessa, and my late wife.

Together.

Smiling.

Dated three weeks before the wedding.

My wedding.
