Chapter 2: The Card on the Railing

We pulled up to the house and I saw the SUV parked in the driveway.

My SUV.

The one I had saved for two years to buy.

Dad looked at it for a long moment.

Then he got out.

I grabbed Noah and followed.

Before I could reach the front door, it swung open.

My mother-in-law, Diane, stepped onto the porch with her arms crossed and her chin raised.

Her eyes went straight past my father to me.

"You called your daddy?" she said.

"Really, Camila."

My father said nothing.

He simply looked at her the way I imagined he had once looked at soldiers who had made a serious mistake.

Diane turned to him with a thin smile.

"I don't know what she told you, but this is a family matter.

We'd appreciate if you—"

"Where is Ethan?" my father said quietly.

She blinked.

"Inside.

Why?"

"Go get him."

Something in his voice made her hesitate for just a second.

Then she laughed softly and said, "Look, I don't know who you think you are, but you're standing on my property."

My father reached into his jacket pocket.

He placed a single card on the porch railing between them.

Diane looked down at it.

Her smile disappeared.

And in that moment, the front door opened again — and it wasn't Ethan who stepped out.

It was someone I had never expected to see at that house.

Ever.

What Camila saw next changed everything she thought she knew about her own marriage.
