Chapter 1: The Unopened Envelope

I was upstairs, searching for my reading glasses.
I went downstairs for the pie.
Instead I found Rosa standing in my hallway with a cardboard box in her hands and a pile of used plates beside her.
Twenty-two years of Thanksgivings, and I'd never watched her eat in the hallway.
"Why is Rosa eating leftovers?"
The table turned to face me.
Forks froze in midair.
My daughter-in-law touched her pearls.
I raised the envelope.
Cream paper.
Rosa's name in my handwriting.
The seal was still unbroken.
"I gave this to you yesterday."
She turned pale beneath her makeup.
Then I noticed Rosa's face.
Not relief.
Not anger.
Recognition.
I placed the envelope in her hands.
She stared at it, then at me, then at the woman in the pearls.
"Sir…" she whispered.
"This isn't the first one."
I felt a chill settle in my chest.
"How many?"
