Chapter 2: The Woman on the Phone
James stared at the papers in Emily’s trembling hands.
“These aren’t the certificates the hospital issued,” she whispered.
“Victoria replaced them before you came home.”
“What are you saying?”
Emily pulled a folded photograph from her pocket.
It showed one of the twins wearing a hospital bracelet.
The name printed on it was not Cole.
It was Moore.
James went pale.
“Who is Moore?”
“I heard Victoria arguing with someone on the phone,” Emily said.
“She told them you could never discover who gave birth to these babies.
When I confronted her, she tied me up and said she would make sure you blamed me.”
The front door suddenly opened.
Victoria stepped inside, saw the papers, and froze.
“James, don’t listen to her.”
“Then explain this bracelet,” he demanded.
Victoria’s face changed.
Before she could answer, Emily’s phone rang on the floor.
James put it on speaker.
A frightened woman said, “Emily, did you find my babies?”
Victoria lunged for the phone—but James caught her wrist.
