Chapter 2: Ask Your Wife
The room went still the moment the security footage finished playing.
Everyone had seen it.
Jessica stumbling forward.
Jessica screaming.
Jessica pointing at Gloria with tears running down her face.
All of it staged.
Daniel stepped toward her slowly.
"Why?" he asked.
His voice was quiet, but his hands were shaking.
Jessica didn't back down.
She reached into her bag and pulled out a photograph.
She held it up for the whole room to see.
"Because of this," she said.
"Your father didn't d*e in that accident, Daniel.
He was there.
With her family.
And someone made sure he never came home."
Gloria's mother made a sound from across the room.
A small, strangled sound that stopped every conversation dead.
Daniel took the photograph from Jessica's hand.
His face changed.
"Where did you get this?" he whispered.
Jessica looked directly at Gloria.
Not at Daniel.
At Gloria.
"Ask your wife," she said.
"Ask her what she already knows."
Gloria opened her mouth.
Then closed it.
And in that silence, Daniel saw something in her eyes he had never seen before.
He didn't know what it meant yet.
But he knew it wasn't nothing.
