Chapter 1: The Inhaler

Juniper's breathing had already turned into frightened little gasps when I saw Tabitha snatch the inhaler from her hand.
My four-year-old daughter reached for it desperately.
Tabitha lifted it higher.
"Give my daughter her inhaler!"
I crossed the room, ripped it from my sister's hand, and sl*pped her across the face before dropping to my knees beside Juniper.
"Breathe with Daddy.
Slow."
I fitted the inhaler to her spacer.
One puff.
Then another as instructed in her asthma plan.
Juniper's shoulders finally began to loosen.
Behind me, Tabitha touched her cheek.
"She better get used to going without it."
Juniper grabbed my sleeve.
"Aunt Tabitha takes it every time you leave."
I went still.
Then Willa stepped forward holding her phone.
"I recorded what happened before you got here."
The video began.
Tabitha appeared beside Juniper's inhaler pouch.
My father, Orson, stood behind her.
Then Tabitha said something that made my bl**d turn cold.
"Not yet.
Let her get worse first."

I looked at my sister.
"How could you do this to a defenseless child?"
