Chapter 2: What the Math Reveals

The glass shattered across the stone.

Nobody moved.

Mark's voice dropped low.

Almost careful.

"Four years old," he said.

"And Sterling Capital signed its first agreement with Reynolds Digital exactly five years ago."

Alexander turned toward him slowly.

"Mark."

"I'm just doing the math, sir."

"Stop."

But Mark didn't stop.

He looked straight at me.

"You were at the founding conference.

I saw your name on the guest list afterward.

You and Alexander were both there."

My arms tightened around Lily.

She had fallen quiet against my shoulder.

I could feel her listening.

My mother pressed a hand over her mouth.

My father still hadn't moved.

For once in his life, he had nothing to say.

Chloe stepped away from Mark.

Not toward me.

Just away from him.

That small movement told me everything about what her marriage actually was.

Alexander's voice was quiet.

Controlled.

Final.

"This conversation is over."

"Is it?" Mark said.

"Because if that little girl is who I think she is—"

"Enough."

The single word landed like a door closing.

Mark went silent.

But his eyes stayed on Lily.

And in the back of the SUV, still wrapped in Alexander Sterling's jacket, my daughter looked up at me and whispered—

"Mommy, why is everyone staring at me?"

I had no answer.

Not one I could give her.

Not yet.
