Chapter 2: She's Done This Before

Ethan grabbed Victoria by the arm and pulled her into the hallway.

"You could have burned my son alive," he said.

His voice was low and shaking.

"Ethan, listen to me—"

"I saw the mark.

I saw where the iron was.

Don't."

Victoria's face changed.

The tears stopped.

Something colder took their place.

"You have no idea what you're throwing away," she said quietly.

"Get your things.

Tonight."

The maid stood in the doorway, holding the baby tight against her chest.

Her hands were still trembling.

She had worked in this house for eleven years.

She had never raised her voice once — until today.

What she hadn't told Ethan yet was the part that frightened her most.

This wasn't the first time.

Three weeks ago, she had found a burn mark on the baby's blanket.

She had said nothing.

She had blamed herself for not watching closely enough.

But tonight she had seen it with her own eyes.

As Ethan walked back toward the nursery, his phone buzzed on the table.

He glanced at the screen.

It was a message from a number he didn't recognize.

*She's done this before.

I have proof.

Don't let her near that child.*

Ethan looked up slowly — and found Victoria watching him from across the room.

She had seen the message too.
