Chapter 2: The Envelope at the Door

Maya hurried after him and grabbed his sleeve.

“You can’t do this today!

The venue, the food, the honeymoon—you promised to pay for everything!”

Marcus slowly pulled his arm free.

“I made those promises to the daughter who called me Dad for twenty-two years.”

The man waiting near the ballroom doors stepped forward with a smug smile.

“Don’t punish Maya because she finally learned the truth.”

“What truth?” Marcus demanded.

“That you kept me away from her,” the man replied.

“I wrote letters.

I sent money.

You made sure she never saw any of it.”

Marcus stared at him.

“I never received a single letter or one dollar from you.”

Maya’s face tightened.

“Stop lying!

He showed me copies.”

Then a woman’s voice rang out from the doorway.

“Those letters are fake.”

Everyone turned.

Maya’s mother stood there holding a brown envelope, her hands shaking.

“Maya, Marcus never kept your father away,” she said.

“He disappeared willingly—and he didn’t return for you.”

The man rushed toward her.

“Give me that envelope!”

But she stepped back and pulled out a bank statement.

When Maya saw the name printed beside a recent transfer, her bouquet slipped from her hands.

“Why is my wedding fund in his account?” she whispered.
