Chapter 2: Whose Name Is on the Deed?

Margaret stood on the other side of that locked door, completely still.

She could hear Sarah's fist hitting the wood.

Hard.

Impatient.

"Open this door right now, Margaret.

This is MY house!"

David said nothing.

He just stood in the hallway, watching his wife pound on his mother's door like it was nothing.

Like Margaret was nothing.

Then Margaret spoke.

Quietly.

Calmly.

"Sarah…

whose name do you think is on the deed?"

The pounding stopped.

"David." Margaret's voice came through the door without a tremor.

"Did you ever tell her the truth about this house?

About who paid for it?

About what your father signed before he passed?"

Silence.

Then Sarah turned slowly toward David.

His face had gone pale.

"David…" Sarah's voice was different now.

Lower.

"What is she talking about?"

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Margaret slid something under the door.

A single folded paper.

Sarah picked it up.

Her hands were shaking before she even finished reading the first line.

---

What was written on that paper — and what Sarah didn't know about the house she thought was hers — changes everything.
