Chapter 2: The Photograph She Was Never Meant to See

Margaret’s smile widened as she looked around the table.
“What’s that?
Another excuse?”
I placed the envelope beside my husband’s plate.
His face changed the moment he saw the return address.
“Where did you get this?” he whispered.
“Why don’t you tell your mother?” I replied.
Margaret folded her arms.
“Stop being dramatic.
My son works all day while you embarrass him with meals like this.”
My husband reached for the envelope, but I covered it with my hand.
“No,” I said.
“She wanted the whole family involved.
Now they can hear the truth with her.”
The room went quiet.
Margaret glanced at her son, and for the first time, her confidence slipped.
“What have you done?” she demanded.
“I asked myself the same question when this arrived yesterday.”
My husband pushed back his chair.
“Please.
We should discuss this privately.”
“Privately?” I repeated.
“You had six months to speak privately.”
His sister stared at him.
“Six months?
What is she talking about?”
Before he could answer, Margaret grabbed the envelope and tore it open.
A photograph slid onto the table, followed by an official letter.
She looked at the photograph—and every bit of color vanished from her face.
“This can’t be,” she whispered.
Then she turned to her son.
“You promised me she would never find out.”
