Chapter 2: The Camera Never Lies

Melisande's face went pale when she noticed the camera.
Then her expression hardened.
"That thing hasn't worked in months," she said.
"No one will believe a word from you."
I didn't answer.
I pulled out my phone and pressed play.
Her own voice filled the room.
*"Aunt Melisande makes me give her my awards."* Then the sound of paper tearing.
She lunged for my phone.
I stepped back.
"Ivo has been giving you his medals all year, hasn't he?" I said.
"Every single one."
Ivo nodded from behind me, his eyes red.
"She said if I told anyone, she'd make sure I got held back a grade."
The room went completely still.
Melisande straightened up and smoothed her jacket.
"He's a child.
No one takes a child's word over mine."
Then the door opened.
Ivo's teacher, Mrs.
Hargrove, stepped inside.
She had been standing in the hallway.
Her face said she had heard everything.
"Actually," Mrs.
Hargrove said quietly, "I do."
Melisande turned.
For the first time, she had nothing to say.

Hargrove pulled from her bag — was something none of us expected.
---
What Mrs.
May you like
Hargrove revealed changed everything for Ivo and Melisande both.
