Chapter 2: What a Twelve-Year-Old Knew That the Room Did Not

Part 2 ⬇️
Brett's eyes found Audrey's table exactly three seconds after he entered.
She counted.
She did not know why, but she counted.
He did not stop walking.
He did not stumble or pale or drop Sierra's hand.
He simply looked at Audrey the way a man looks at furniture he no longer needs — briefly, without apology — and then looked away.
That was when Micah stood up.
"Micah—" Audrey reached for his sleeve.
"I'm not going to cause a scene, Mom." His voice was steady in a way that frightened her.
"I just need to return something."
Before she could stop him, he crossed the ballroom floor with his grandmother's old recipe card held in both hands — the one Audrey had framed and brought tonight as a centerpiece tribute to Opal.
Audrey had not even noticed him take it from the table.
He stopped directly in front of Brett and Sierra.
Four hundred people watched a twelve-year-old boy look up at his father without flinching.
"Dad," Micah said clearly, loud enough for the nearest tables to hear, "that brooch belongs to my mom.
And so does everything else in this room that has her name on it."
Sierra's smile faltered.
Brett's did not — but his jaw tightened in a way Audrey recognized.
She had seen it in boardrooms, in arguments, in the moments before he said something he could not take back.
Then an older man near the investors' table slowly set down his glass.
And reached inside his jacket.
---
What that man pulled out of his jacket changed everything Audrey thought she knew about that night.
