Chapter 2: The Address on the Screen

The wife had barely reached the front door when her husband rushed after her.

“Wait.

Don’t leave me like this.”

“Like what?” she asked, turning around.

“Without someone to pay your bills and protect your lies?”

His mother stood up sharply.

“You’re humiliating my son in his own home!”

“No,” the wife replied.

“He humiliated himself when he let me work overtime while he pretended to leave for work every morning.”

Her husband lowered his voice.

“Please.

We can discuss this privately.”

Then her phone buzzed.

She glanced at the screen—and froze.

It was a bank alert.

Thousands of dollars had just been transferred from their emergency account to his mother.

“What did you do?” she whispered.

Her husband reached for the phone, but she pulled it away.

His mother’s face turned pale.

“That money was only supposed to cover the deposit.”

“The deposit on what?” the wife demanded.

Before either of them could answer, another message appeared.

It was from a real estate agent—and the address beneath it was one the wife knew very well.

It belonged to her own mother.
