Chapter 2: What She Whispered Before She Sat Down

"She said, 'Tell her tonight.

Or I will.'"

I stared at my friend.

"Tell me what?"

She grabbed my arm.

"There's more.

A lot more."

Daniel had gone quiet behind me.

I turned to face him.

"What does she mean, Daniel?"

He wouldn't look at me.

"Daniel."

"It's not what you think," he said quietly.

"Then what is it?"

He opened his mouth.

Closed it again.

My friend stepped closer and lowered her voice.

"She's been texting him every day for four months.

I saw them once — at the coffee shop on Birchwood.

They weren't laughing like friends.

They were arguing.

Like two people with something to hide."

My legs felt unsteady.

Four months.

I thought back to every time Megan had called me her sister.

Every time she hugged me at the door.

Every birthday card.

Every phone call when I cried about my marriage feeling distant.

She knew exactly why it felt distant.

"Is that true?" I asked Daniel.

He finally looked at me.

And the expression on his face told me everything before he said a single word.

Then my phone buzzed again.

Not Megan this time.

It was Ryan.

*"We need to talk.

Not here.

Please.

There's something you don't know about your husband and my wife — and it goes back further than you think."*

What Ryan revealed next left me completely unable to breathe.
