Chapter 2: Three Words on a Sticky Note

Inside the box was a USB drive.

That was all.

A small black USB drive with a single sticky note attached.

Noah had written three words in his careful ten-year-old handwriting.

*For everyone, Dad.*

Julian stared at it.

His hands were shaking.

Victoria leaned over.

"What is it?

Julian, what's wrong?"

He didn't answer her.

He was looking at Noah.

And Noah was looking back at him with the calm, steady eyes of a child who had been quietly watching adults lie for two years.

"Where did you get this?" Julian's voice dropped to something low and dangerous.

"Your office," Noah said simply.

"The last time you forgot to pick me up and I had to wait three hours."

The room had gone very still.

Julian's senior partner, a grey-haired man named Hargrove, slowly set down his champagne glass.

Julian took one step toward Noah.

I stepped between them.

"Don't," I said quietly.

He stopped.

But his eyes told me everything — whatever was on that drive, it was bad enough to make a man like Julian Vance afraid of a ten-year-old boy.

Victoria touched his arm.

"Julian.

Tell me what's on it."

He pulled away from her.

That was when I realized she didn't know either.

What Noah found in that office destroyed more than one marriage that night.
