Chapter 2: Her Bouquet Was Shaking

I didn't move.
Rebecca's smile flickered.
She glanced at the guests, then back at me.
"Darling.
Everyone is waiting."
"Where were you planning to send her?"
The question came out quiet.
That made it worse.
Rebecca stepped closer and lowered her voice.
"We talked about this.
Emily needs structure.
A proper environment.
There's a wonderful school upstate—"
"You told a seven-year-old she was leaving forever."
"I told her the truth.
You're too soft with her.
That's always been the problem."
Emily pressed her face into my shoulder.
I looked at Rebecca — really looked at her — and realized I was seeing her clearly for the first time.
"Who else knew about this?"
She hesitated.
Just one second too long.
"No one.
It was just a note.
You're making a scene over nothing."
Then my phone buzzed.
A message from a number I didn't recognize.
*She's been planning this since before she said yes to you.
Ask her about the apartment.
Ask her whose name is on the lease.*
I looked up.
Rebecca was watching my face.
Her bouquet was shaking in her hands.
