Chapter 2: The Color That Left His Face

Sarah's face went from stunned to furious in about three seconds.
She stormed up the porch steps and pounded on the front door.
"Kimberly!
Open this door right now!"
I didn't move from my chair.
David was right behind her, his voice low and nervous.
"Mom, please.
Just open the door.
We can talk about this."
I set down my tea, walked slowly to the door, and opened it.
Sarah pushed past me into the entryway, staring at the empty guest room at the top of the stairs.
"You had no right," she said, spinning around.
"Those are our things."
"They're on the porch," I said.
"Neatly packed.
Nothing broken."
"This is not over." Her voice dropped to something quieter, and that made it worse.
"David, tell her."
David looked at me for the first time all morning.
There was something in his eyes I hadn't seen before.
Not anger.
Something closer to shame — and beneath it, something he was clearly trying not to say.
"Mom," he started.
"There's something you don't know yet."
Sarah grabbed his arm.
Hard.
"Don't."
He looked at her hand on his arm, then back at me.
And then his phone rang.
He glanced at the screen, and the color drained completely from his face.
