Chapter 2: The Name She Had Never Heard Before

The bank representative spoke calmly while I stood in the cold.

"Mrs.

Grant, we've flagged several transactions on your account.

We've been attempting to reach you for three weeks."

Three weeks.

I asked her to read the charges aloud.

She did.

Slowly.

I stopped counting after eleven thousand dollars.

I walked back inside.

Dean hadn't moved.

Priscilla had.

She was at the kitchen table, phone face-down in front of her, hands pressed flat on the wood.

"How much?" Dean asked quietly.

I told him.

He sat down like something inside him gave way.

"Priscilla." His voice had changed completely.

"How long?"

She said nothing.

"How long?"

"It wasn't like that." Her voice came out small and careful.

"I was going to pay it back.

After the new year.

I had a plan."

Dean looked at her the way a man looks when he realizes he has been defending the wrong person for a very long time.

I set my phone on the counter between them.

"The bank is sending documentation," I said.

"Everything.

Dated."

Priscilla's eyes moved to my phone.

Then to my face.

Then to Dean.

That was when she said a name I had never heard before.

A name that made Dean stand up slowly from his chair and take one step backward, as if the floor beneath him had shifted.
