Chapter 2: The Message She Never Expected

PART 2 ⬇️

I carried my suitcase to the front door myself.

Daniel followed me into the hallway.

"Mom.

Stop.

You're being dramatic."

I didn't turn around.

"I'm being clear.

There's a difference."

"You can't just walk out like this."

"Watch me."

Claire stayed in the kitchen doorway, arms folded.

She didn't apologize.

She didn't move.

She just watched with an expression I hadn't seen on her face before — something cold and satisfied, like a person who had finally said the thing they'd been holding for a long time.

That told me more than any argument could have.

Lucy was still standing in the hallway in her pajamas, clutching her stuffed rabbit.

I crouched down and held her face in both hands.

"Grandma loves you.

That never changes.

Not ever."

She whispered, "Then why are you leaving at night?"

I didn't have an answer that was right for an eight-year-old.

I kissed her forehead, stood up, and picked up my bag.

Daniel's voice dropped low behind me.

"If you walk out that door tonight, don't expect things to go back to normal."

I paused with my hand on the door.

"Daniel," I said quietly, "what exactly do you think normal has been?"

I stepped outside.

The night air was cool and still.

My phone buzzed before I even reached my car.

It wasn't Daniel.

It was a message from a number I didn't recognize — and the first line made my hand go completely still.

*"Barbara.

There's something about Claire you need to know.

I've been trying to find the right time.

Tonight might be it."*

What Barbara read next stopped her in her tracks — and what she discovered about Claire changed everything.
