Chapter 2: What She Pulled Out of Her Bag

I looked at Michael for a long moment.

"I did exactly what Vanessa said," I told him quietly.

"I removed my payment.

Since I never paid for this trip, there was nothing to keep on file."

Vanessa stepped closer, her voice dropping to something sharp and dangerous.

"Fix this.

Right now."

"I don't think I will."

She turned to Michael.

"Tell her to fix it.

Tell her!"

Michael looked between us.

His mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

The transfer employee stood perfectly still, pretending to study his screen.

A couple nearby had stopped pretending not to listen.

Vanessa pulled out her own card and shoved it toward the desk.

The employee ran it quietly.

Then he shook his head.

"I'm sorry, ma'am.

The suite requires the original guarantor's card or full prepayment.

That total would be—"

"How much?" Michael asked.

The employee said the number.

Vanessa went white.

Michael turned to me.

His voice was low, almost pleading.

"Mom.

Please.

We can talk about this.

Whatever I did wrong, I'm sorry.

Just fix it."

I looked at my son — really looked at him — and felt something I hadn't expected.

Not anger.

Sadness.

Because this wasn't the first time Vanessa had done something like this.

It was just the first time I had proof.

I reached into my bag slowly.

And pulled out my phone.
