Chapter 2: The Signature That Wasn’t Mine

Colin opened the door and froze.

Richard stood on the porch beside two movers.

A black car waited at the curb.

“What is this?” Colin demanded.

“My ride,” I said, lifting my suitcase.

Jessica hurried downstairs.

“Margaret, Oakridge isn’t expecting you until January!”

“I’m not going to Oakridge.”

Her smile vanished.

“Then where are you going?”

Richard stepped inside and handed me a thick envelope.

My fingers trembled, but not from fear.

Colin stared at it.

“Mom, what did that ticket win?”

“Enough to give me choices,” I replied.

Jessica suddenly reached for the envelope.

Richard pulled it away.

“This belongs to Margaret.”

“She lives under our roof!” Jessica snapped.

“Anything affecting this family affects us.”

Richard’s expression hardened.

“Then perhaps you should explain why someone recently requested credit in Margaret’s name.”

The room went silent.

I turned toward Jessica.

Her face had lost all its color.

Colin looked between us.

“What is he talking about?”

Jessica backed toward the stairs.

“I have no idea.”

Richard opened his briefcase and removed a document bearing my signature.

Only I had never signed it.

Then Colin saw the amount printed at the top—and whispered, “Jessica…
