Chapter 1: The Morning She Decided to Stop Being Polite

My entitled daughter-in-law gave me less than two hours to clear out my own master bedroom.

She had no idea that when she returned, her entire life would be waiting on the front porch.

'Take your belongings out,' Sarah said, sipping her iced latte.

'We're moving into your bedroom.'

I stood by the sink, holding a damp dish towel.

I'm sixty-four, and I've owned this home for over twenty years.

My son David stared down at the floor.

'Mom, Sarah needs more space,' he muttered.

'Just be respectful and let us use the master bedroom.'

Respectful.

In my own home.

They had been staying with me for just three days.

'The guest room is your room,' I said quietly.

'That was the deal.'

Sarah rolled her eyes and placed her glass down with a heavy clink.

'The movers arrive at eleven.

Have your room cleared out.'

Then they drove off to run errands.

I didn't cry.

I didn't yell.

Instead, I walked upstairs straight past my room and into theirs.

I opened their suitcases and began packing everything they owned.

Her silk blouses.

His shoes.

Their skincare bottles.

By 10:30, four suitcases and three boxes were packed.

I carried them all down to the front porch and locked the front door.

At 10:55, their silver SUV pulled into the driveway.

Sarah stepped out, laughing on her phone — until she looked toward the porch.

Her laughter stopped instantly.

---

Sarah's smile is gone.

David is about to face a choice he never saw coming.
