Chapter 2: What My Son Said Through the Door

Sarah stood on the front porch staring at her suitcases.

Her face went from shock to fury in about three seconds.

She hammered on the door with both fists.

"Open this door RIGHT NOW.

This is not YOUR house anymore!"

I stood on the other side and said nothing.

David ran up behind her, breathing hard.

"Mom, please.

Just open the door.

We can talk about this."

"We already talked," I said through the door.

"Three days ago.

You both agreed to the guest room."

Sarah spun on David.

"I TOLD you she would do something like this.

Call the police.

She can't lock us out."

I heard David go quiet.

Then I heard him say the words I had never expected from my own son.

"Actually, Sarah…

the house is in her name."

The porch went completely silent.

Then Sarah's voice dropped low.

Dangerously low.

"Then we'll just have to fix that, won't we."

It wasn't a question.

My hand tightened on my phone.

Because two months ago, David had asked me to sign some paperwork.

Something to do with finances, he said.

I had trusted him completely.

I suddenly wasn't sure I should have.
