Chapter 2: The Woman Who Recognized His Name

Part 2 — continued in comments 👇

---

Her name was Renee.

I stared at the message for a long time before I could make myself read it properly.

She said she had been following our engagement on social media.

She said she recognized Marcus's name the moment she saw it.

She said she was sorry to contact me this way.

Then she wrote: *"I was engaged to Marcus four years ago.

I called off the wedding too.

I need you to know — you are not the first."*

My chest tightened.

I typed back immediately.

*"What do you mean?"*

Her reply came fast, like she had been waiting.

*"Delia didn't ruin your mother's hair by accident.

Marcus sent women he wanted to push away to that salon.

When he was done with the relationship, Delia would do something bad enough to start a fight.

He used her.

Every time."*

I read it twice.

Three times.

My hands were shaking.

I thought about my mother sitting in that chair.

I thought about Marcus's voice on the phone — so calm, so ready with excuses.

Maybe your mother moved.

He had said it without hesitation.

Because he had said it before.

I called Renee.

She answered on the first ring.

Before I could speak, she said —

*"There's something else.

Something I found out after I left him.

And I think you need to see it."*

---

What Renee revealed next left her speechless — and it wasn't just about Marcus.
