Chapter 2: The Envelope With Her Name On It

The ballroom had gone completely silent.

Daniel laid the folder open on the gift table — right next to the torn pieces of Mom's letter.

I watched Richard Whitmore's eyes move across the top page.

Whatever he saw made him take one slow step backward.

"What is this?" Vanessa's voice had lost its confidence.

"A transfer of assets," Daniel said calmly.

"Completed and registered this morning."

Vanessa turned to me.

"Ethan, tell your mother to stop this right now."

I couldn't speak.

I was still looking at my father, who hadn't raised his eyes from the floor since Daniel walked in.

"Dad." He finally looked up.

"How long have you known?"

He didn't answer.

That was answer enough.

Mom reached into her handbag and pulled out a second envelope — small, sealed, with Vanessa's name written across the front in blue ink.

She held it out without a word.

Vanessa didn't take it.

"What's in that envelope?" Richard asked.

His voice was steady, but his hand was not.

Mom looked at him for a long moment.

"The reason I asked her to read the letter first."

Then Vanessa's phone buzzed loudly on the table.

She glanced at the screen — and her face went white.

She knew who it was.

And from the way Richard suddenly turned away, so did he.

---

What's inside that envelope — and who just sent that message?

The full truth comes out in a way no one in that ballroom expected.
