Chapter 5: What the Recorder Heard

Dana opened the first audio file.
Ryan’s voice came through the phone, low and sharp.
“You will tell Mrs.
Parker you fell.”
Sophia’s recorded voice trembled.
“But I didn’t.”
“You fell.”
Then came the sound of a door shutting and Lauren saying, “Ryan, she can’t go to school looking like that.”
“I’ll withdraw her.”
“Her teacher will ask questions.”
“Not if she never sees her again.”
Dana stopped the recording.
Sophia pressed her face into my side.
“Do you want me to turn it off?” she asked.
Sophia shook her head.
“They need to know.”
The next file began with papers moving across a table.
Lauren said, “There’s only forty thousand left.”
Ryan answered, “Then transfer it before Michael sees the annual statement.”
“He’s the backup trustee.”
“He hasn’t asked about Sophia’s trust in five years.”
The room went still.
I gripped the edge of the chair.
Sophia looked up at me.
“What’s a trustee?”
“Someone who should have protected what belonged to you.”
“You didn’t?”
Her question landed harder than Ryan’s shouting.
“I didn’t even check,” I said.
“Your grandmother named me, and I trusted your father to handle everything.”
“You trusted him instead of me.”
I lowered my head.
“Yes.”
Sophia slid away from me.
“I tried to tell you at my birthday.”
I remembered her pulling my sleeve beside the garden gate.
Ryan had called her dramatic, and I had laughed because everyone else had.
“You said your daddy was angry about money,” I whispered.
“You told me to be a good girl.”
My knees touched the floor before I realized I had moved.
“I failed you, Sophia.
I heard you, but I didn’t listen.”
Her lower lip trembled.
“Are you listening now?”
“Yes.
Even if you’re angry with me.
Even if you never forgive me.”
She put one small hand against my cheek.
Tears ran down my face, and she began crying too.
“I don’t want you to go,” she said.
“I’m right here.”
Dana turned away long enough to wipe her eyes.
Then she faced the door as Ryan’s lawyer entered.
“These recordings were obtained illegally,” Malcolm said.
“They cannot be trusted.”
Mrs.
Parker’s voice remained on the speaker.
“The device activated only when Sophia pressed its button.
She asked me for help.”
“You instructed a child to record her parents.”
“I instructed a frightened child to call for help.”
Ryan pushed past Officer Reed.
“Michael, I’ll make you a deal.”
“I’m listening.”
“Delete the files, withdraw the complaint, and I’ll repay the trust.”
“That money was never yours.”
“Neither is Sophia.”
She flinched.
Dana immediately stood in front of her.
Ryan lowered his voice.
“If you continue this, I’ll tell the court you ignored your trustee duties.
You’ll be investigated with us.”
“Then they can investigate me.”
“And when they decide you helped me?”
“I’ll answer every question.”
Malcolm handed Dana a document.
“My clients are requesting an emergency hearing.
They allege Michael has manipulated Sophia to gain control of her trust.”
Dana read the first page.
“Until the judge reviews this, Sophia will enter temporary foster care.”
“She can stay with me,” I said.
“Not while you’re named in the financial allegation.”
Ryan smiled at me over Dana’s shoulder.
Sophia wrapped both arms around my neck.
“You promised you wouldn’t leave.”
“I’ll fight this.”
“You said you’d stay.”
Dana gently loosened her hands.
I stood helplessly as she carried Sophia toward the door.
May you like
Ryan leaned close enough that only I could hear him.
“By tomorrow night, she’ll be back home—and you’ll never see her again.”
