Chapter 2: The Name She'd Never Heard
Weston screamed.
Not from guilt.
From pain.
He grabbed his foot and stumbled sideways, and I used that one second to reach past him and twist the deadbolt open myself.
"You crazy—" he started.
"Don't." My voice was quiet.
Steady.
"Don't say another word to me."
Corinne grabbed my arm.
"You are not walking out of this family."
I looked down at her hand on my arm, then back at her face.
"I'm not walking out of the family, Corinne.
I was never in it."
I stepped outside.
The afternoon air hit my face.
My back still ached from where she'd shoved me into the wall.
I sat in my car and didn't cry.
I opened my phone instead.
There were three missed calls from a number I didn't recognize.
And one text message that made my hands go still.
It was from someone named Dani.
*"Ava, I don't know if you'll believe me.
But you need to know what Weston did with the money before you marry him.
Please call me."*
