Chapter 2: Fourteen Months of Silence

I didn't answer him.

I just held Lily tighter and kept walking.

The lead SUV door swung open and a tall man in a dark suit stepped out, eyes scanning the entrance until they landed on me.

He gave a single respectful nod.

"Ma'am.

We're ready when you are."

My husband grabbed my arm.

"Chloe.

Who IS this man?"

I looked down at his hand on my arm, then slowly back up at his face.

"Let go of me, Daniel."

Something in my voice made him release his grip immediately.

His sister appeared behind him in the doorway, still clutching her cheek, fury burning in her eyes.

"Daniel, are you really going to let her walk out with YOUR daughter?!"

"She's MY daughter too," I said quietly.

"Something you both seem to keep forgetting."

That's when the man in the suit stepped forward and handed Daniel a sealed envelope.

Daniel's face went pale the moment he saw the name printed on the front.

"What is this?" he whispered.

"You'll want to open that privately," the man said calmly.

"Your wife has been very patient.

That patience ends today."

Daniel tore the envelope open with shaking hands.

I watched his expression collapse — shock, then something that looked terrifyingly close to guilt.

😨

His sister made a sharp move toward me.

"You have no idea what you're doing—"

"I know exactly what I'm doing," I said.

"I've known for fourteen months." 💔

I stepped toward the SUV.

Daniel's voice cracked behind me.

"Chloe — how long have you known?!"

I didn't turn around.
