Chapter 2: The Woman in My Pajamas Knew Something I Didn't

Part 2 ⬇️
Margaret's face went red.
"You're letting your pride put my son in the ground!"
"I'm asking medical questions," I said.
"That is not pride."
Dr.
Harris looked between us.
I could see him calculating — the hysterical mother-in-law, the calm wife, the consent form still unsigned.
"Dr.
Cain," he said quietly, "I understand your concerns.
But time is a factor."
"I know it is.
That's exactly why I'm asking."
Then Sienna spoke.
Her voice was soft.
Almost careful.
"He was fine when we had dinner."
The corridor went silent.
I turned slowly.
"Dinner."
She blinked.
"I mean — he stopped by for documents.
And we — there was food.
It wasn't —"
"What time did you eat?"
"Around nine."
"And he collapsed at what time?"
She looked at Margaret.
Margaret looked at the floor.
Something had just shifted.
And everyone in that hallway felt it.
I turned back to Dr.
Harris.
"I want the full chemistry panel before anything is signed.
And I want to see the echo images myself."
He nodded once and walked back through the doors.
Margaret stepped close.
Her voice dropped to something cold and controlled.
"You sign those papers, Elena.
Or I will make sure everyone knows you let him d\*e out of spite."
I looked at her for a long moment.
"Everyone already knows I'm a doctor, Margaret.
What they don't know yet — is how long you've known about that apartment."
Her expression didn't change.
But her hand, gripping that expensive handbag, went completely still.
---
What Elena found when she reviewed those medical results — and what she discovered about Margaret's role in all of this — is far worse than anyone in that corridor suspected.
