Chapter 2: What Harold Pulled from His Pocket

Everyone at the table went quiet.

Daniel's father, Harold, slowly reached into his jacket pocket.

His hand was steady.

His face was calm.

That was what frightened me most.

He pulled out a folded piece of paper and laid it flat on the table.

"Daniel," Harold said, without raising his voice.

"Do you know what this is?"

Daniel stared at it.

He didn't move.

"That's..." He swallowed.

"Where did you get that?"

"Your wife sent it to me," Harold said.

"Three weeks ago."

Every head at the table turned toward me.

Daniel's mother.

His sisters.

His cousins.

All twenty-two of them, silent.

"She didn't ask me to do anything," Harold continued.

"She just wanted me to know the truth.

About how long this has been going on.

About how much she has quietly covered.

Alone."

Daniel's face went pale.

"Dad, I can explain—"

"You've had years to explain." Harold pushed the paper toward the center of the table.

"This is a record.

Every dinner.

Every vacation.

Every bill your wife paid while you told her it was temporary."

Daniel's sister leaned forward to look.

Then she sat back without a word.

That's when Daniel's phone buzzed loudly on the table.

He looked down at the screen.

Something in his expression broke.
