Chapter 2: The Envelope on the Table

Part 2 👇

The table went completely still.

Daniel's father — a quiet man who never raised his voice at family gatherings — slowly reached into the inside pocket of his jacket and pulled out a folded envelope.

He set it on the table in front of Daniel without a word.

Daniel stared at it.

"Dad…

what is this?"

"Open it," his father said.

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

Daniel's hands weren't steady as he unfolded the envelope.

Inside were printed bank statements.

Pages of them.

His face went pale as he scanned the numbers.

"Where did you get these?" he whispered.

"Your wife sent them to me three weeks ago," his father said.

"I've known everything, son.

Every transfer.

Every dinner you charged to her account without asking.

Every holiday you booked in her name."

The room was absolutely silent.

Twenty-two people.

Not one of them moved.

Daniel looked at me.

I didn't look away.

"You knew?" he said.

"You planned this?"

"I just stopped paying," I said quietly.

"You planned everything else yourself."

His father folded his hands on the table.

"There's something written on the back of the last page, Daniel.

I think you should read it out loud."

Daniel turned the final page over slowly.

His face collapsed.

What was written on that page — and what does it mean for Daniel and his family?
