Chapter 2: The Recording Beneath the Cabinet

Two officers stepped through the door.
Marcus moved in front of them like he owned the room — because he'd always acted like he did.
"Gentlemen, I apologize.
My wife is upset.
This is a private family matter."
The older officer looked past him.
Straight at me.
"Ma'am, are you injured?"
I didn't answer right away.
I just turned my face slightly toward the light.
That was enough.
His mother made a sound of disgust.
"She's being dramatic.
She's always been dramatic."
"Ma'am, I need you to step back," the officer said to her.
Firm.
Final.
Marcus lowered his voice and leaned toward me.
"Rachel, stop this right now.
You have no idea what you're doing."
"I know exactly what I'm doing."
I walked to the cabinet beneath the window and picked up the small recording unit.
"This has been running for four months."
The color left his face.
"Everything in this folder," I said, placing a thick envelope on the table, "connects your business account to mine.
The money you've been moving.
The signatures.
The dates."
His mother looked at him.
For the first time all evening, she said nothing.
Then my phone buzzed.
I looked at the screen.
It was my lawyer.
And the message read: *The deed transfer just cleared.
It's done.*
Marcus saw my expression change.
"What did you do, Rachel?"
I looked at him one last time.
"I protected myself.
The way I should have two years ago."
