My hands wouldn't stop shaking.
I took the photograph from Mr.
Crawford.
The woman in it was young, maybe thirty.
She was smiling at the camera.
Ryan had his arm around her.
The two children stood in front of them like a perfect family portrait.
"Ryan." My voice came out quieter than I expected.
"Who is she?"
He said nothing.
Vanessa stepped closer and looked at the photo.
Her smile disappeared.
"Who is that?" she asked him.
Ryan turned away from both of us.
Mr.
Crawford spoke calmly.
"Her name is Diana.
They've been together for nine years.
The children are seven and five."
Vanessa grabbed Ryan's arm.
"You told me Emily was the only one."
He pulled free.
"This isn't the time."
"Nine years?" I said.
"That's our entire marriage."
Ryan finally looked at me.
There was no guilt in his face.
Only calculation.
"You were never supposed to find out this way."
Mr.
Crawford reached into the folder again.
"Mrs.
Bennett, there's something else."
He held out a second document.
I looked down.
It was a life insurance policy.
My name was listed as the insured.
Ryan's name was listed as the sole beneficiary.
The policy had been taken out eight months ago without my signature.
My legs went cold.
Then my daughter's voice came from the front door.
"Mommy?"
She was standing on the steps, watching all of us.
