Chapter 1: The Woman Who Would Not Kneel

My husband hurled cold water in my face and demanded I kneel before his mother.

I knocked him down and walked out, but the truth waiting outside shattered our marriage.

Ice-cold water soaked through my dress.

My mother-in-law stood over me, a smirk lingering on her lips.

"Kneel down and apologize to my mother right now," my husband yelled.

The room went completely silent.

I wiped the dripping water from my eyes.

Without saying a word, I turned to walk away.

His heavy grip locked onto my arm.

Pain shot up my shoulder.

I twisted free and kicked him hard in the chest.

He h*t the floor with a loud crash.

His mother shrieked in horror.

I looked down at his trembling body.

"You wanted me on my knees," I said softly.

"Now look who is down there."

I pulled my coat on and stepped outside into the rain.

My hands were shaking uncontrollably.

As I reached my car, an unknown number called my phone.

A woman's voice whispered through the speaker.

"Check his mother's basement before you drive away."

What is hidden in that basement — and who is this woman?
