The cards were frozen within the hour.
All six of them.
I sat in my car on the shoulder of that highway for a long time, watching the traffic blur past, feeling something I hadn't felt in years.
In control.
When I got home, Shirley was already rearranging my kitchen.
"I moved your spices," she announced without looking up.
"The system you had made no sense."
I didn't argue.
I just smiled and set my purse down on the counter.
That evening, Everett called.
"Stella." His voice was tight.
"My card was declined.
At the airport lounge."
"Oh no," I said.
"That's strange."
"All of them are blocked.
Every single one."
"I'll look into it," I said.
"Safe travels, sweetheart."
I hung up before he could say another word.
Then I opened my laptop and started a new email to our family attorney.
I had already gathered three years of bank records.
But it was what I found attached to one of those statements — a name I didn't recognize, listed as a secondary beneficiary on an account I didn't know existed — that made my hands go completely still.
Everett hadn't just been hiding a woman.
He had been hiding something far bigger.

And Shirley…
had known the whole time.
