"Emily." He said my name through the door like a warning.
"Whatever Marcus told you, it's not what you think.
Open the door and we can talk about this like adults."
I didn't answer.
I was still staring at the laptop screen.
A third message had appeared from V.V.
*She still doesn't know, does she?
That's the only reason you're still standing in that house.*
My hands went cold.
I read it twice.
Then I opened the red folder Marcus had prepared and found a page I had never looked at closely—a flagged transaction summary.
One line had been highlighted in yellow for months, and I had never asked Marcus what it meant.
The destination account belonged to a private medical clinic in Zurich.
The payments had started eleven months before Daniel and I were married.
They were still active.
Someone knocked on the study door.
Not Daniel's slam.
A quiet, deliberate knock.
Then a woman's voice said, "Emily.

Marcus Reed sent me.
I've been waiting to speak with you for a very long time."
I looked at the door.
Then back at the screen.
Then I heard Patricia whisper from somewhere down the hall—low, frightened, nothing like her earlier laughter—"Daniel.
She's here.
She actually came."
