Chapter 2: The Name She Buried

The first domino fell at 9:47 a.m.
Ryan's phone buzzed on the breakfast table.
He glanced down, and the color drained from his face.
"What is this?" he whispered.
Victoria leaned over.
Her expression didn't change — but her hand gripped the edge of the table.
The message was from Harrington Capital's board chairman.
Four words: *Trading has been suspended.*
Ryan called back immediately.
The chairman's voice came through loud enough for the room to hear.
"Ryan, your primary contracts have been flagged.
All three.
The counterparty just filed for a full audit.
Every account tied to those agreements is frozen pending investigation."
Claire stood up so fast her chair fell backward.
"That's impossible.
Those contracts are ironclad."
"They were," I said from the doorway.
They had forgotten I was still in the house.
Ryan turned slowly.
"What did you do?"
"What you made necessary."
Malcolm's face had gone the color of ash.
He knew.
Not everything — but enough.
His eyes moved to the newspaper still folded in his hands, then back to me.
"Who are you?" he said quietly.
It was the first honest question any of them had asked me.
Before I could answer, David appeared behind me in the hallway, holding a manila envelope.
He placed it in my hand without a word.
I set it on the walnut table between the silverware and the untouched omelets.
"Everything you need to understand is in there," I said.
"Start with page seven."
Victoria reached for it — and stopped.
Her name was on the cover.
Her *real* name.
The one she hadn't used in thirty-one years.
Her face went completely still.

What was on page seven — and what was Victoria hiding for thirty-one years?
