Chapter 2: The Freeze

Part 2 ⬇️

Daniel didn't ask why.

He had seen the trust documents.

He knew what withdrawing approval would mean.

He simply said, "I'll have the freeze confirmation to you within the hour," and ended the call.

I sat in the dark for a long time.

Downstairs, I could hear Grant laughing.

Glasses clinking.

Vanessa's voice rising and falling like she had already moved in.

Maybe she had.

I stood slowly, walked to the mirror, and looked at myself.

Torn dress.

Bare feet.

Marks I wouldn't be able to hide for a week.

I didn't cry.

I opened my email.

Daniel had already sent the first document.

I scrolled to the bottom and read the line that mattered.

*Authorization suspended.

Effective immediately.

Pending review by sole trust beneficiary.*

Sole trust beneficiary.

Me.

I heard footsteps on the stairs.

Then Grant's voice through the door, sharp and satisfied.

"Evelyn.

I want your key on the kitchen counter before you leave."

I didn't answer.

"Did you hear me?"

I set the phone face-down on the bed.

"I heard you, Grant."

A pause.

"Good."

He walked away.

He had no idea his bank contacts were about to start calling.

No idea that by morning, $940 million would be unreachable.

No idea that the quiet woman he had just dismissed was the only person on earth who could save his company.

And she had already decided not to.
