Chapter 2: The Men He Never Knew Existed

Part 2 ⬇️

Adrian didn't move.

Nobody did.

The knocking came again.

Harder this time.

Boom.

Boom.

Boom.

"Adrian Cole.

We won't ask a third time."

Adrian turned to his security chief.

"Don't open that door."

The man didn't answer.

He was already stepping back.

"Sir…

I need to show you something."

He held out his phone.

His hand wasn't steady.

Adrian snatched it.

Whatever was on that screen made the color leave his face.

Vanessa moved closer.

"Adrian, what is it?"

He didn't answer her.

He looked at me instead.

For the first time in eleven years, my husband looked at me like he didn't know who I was.

"Who are they?" he asked quietly.

I didn't answer.

"Evelyn.

Who are those men?"

I looked down at my wrists.

Still bound.

Still bleeding where the rope had cut.

"The people," I said softly, "who taught me what silence is actually for."

A guest near the back of the room suddenly gasped.

She was staring at her phone.

"Oh my God," she whispered.

"Does anyone know who Evelyn's family is?"

Adrian spun toward her.

But before she could answer, the front doors opened anyway.

Nobody had unlocked them.

They simply…

opened.

And my oldest brother walked in like he owned every inch of the ground beneath his feet.

He didn't look at Adrian first.

He looked at me.

May you like

Then his jaw tightened.

And he said four words that made Vanessa drop her glass.
