Chapter 2: The Name on the Screen

The paramedics arrived within minutes.
Rosa stood at the door and guided them in before Preston could intercept her.
I heard Veronica's voice behind me as they helped me onto a stretcher.
"She tripped.
The bottle was on the table and she knocked it into her own face."
One of the paramedics paused.
"Ma'am, the chemical pattern on her clothing is not consistent with that."
Silence.
Preston stepped forward.
"My wife is emotional.

"Tell them what you did, Preston."
"Amelia—"
"Tell them what your mother did while you held my arms."
Another silence.

Rosa spoke quietly from the doorway.
"I saw everything."
Veronica's tone shifted immediately.
"You are a housekeeper.

Rosa did not answer.

She had already taken photographs of the foyer.
The spray bottle.
The chemical spreading across the marble.
My wedding photographs scattered across the floor.
As the paramedics moved me toward the door, Preston leaned close.
"Sign the annulment papers when you get out," he said quietly.
"Walk away and this stays private.
Make noise and I will make sure everyone knows you were unstable from the beginning."
I said nothing.
Because at that exact moment, my phone lit up in Rosa's hand.
The name on the screen was: DAD — WILLIAM GRANT.

What Amelia's father said next set everything in motion.
The Caldwells had no idea what was already coming for them.
