Chapter 2: The Woman at the End of the Driveway

— PART 2 —

The officer held up the deed and looked straight at me.

"Sir, is this your signature on the transfer line?"

I leaned in.

My stomach dropped.

Someone had signed my name.

And it wasn't me.

Mason was already backpedaling toward the fence.

"I don't know anything about that.

Teresa asked me to hold it.

That's all."

Teresa spun around, still in handcuffs, and screamed at him.

"You keep your mouth shut, Mason.

Don't say another word."

That one sentence told me everything.

Inside the binder, beneath the deed, the officer found something else — a second document.

A notarized letter stating that I had agreed to transfer the property to my mother as repayment for "years of financial support."

I had never seen it before in my life.

Amy was standing beside me now, Frederick pressed against her shoulder.

She was shaking.

"Connor," she whispered.

"I found papers like that two weeks ago.

In Teresa's bag.

She told me they were insurance documents.

I believed her."

Two weeks.

My mother had been sitting in my living room, holding forged documents, while Amy served her coffee and cleaned her dishes.

Then one of the officers called out from near the front door.

"There's someone here asking to speak to the homeowner.

Says she's been waiting outside for over an hour.

Claims she has information about the account."

I turned around.

A woman I had never seen before was standing at the end of my driveway, holding a manila envelope.
