Chapter 2: The Name on the Phone

Part 2 ⬇️
The officer held up the folder.
"Sir, do you recognize this document?"
I looked at the deed to my house.
My name was on it.
But there was something else — a second signature on the transfer line.
Someone had already signed it over.
I looked at Mason.
His face had gone white.
"Who signed this?" I asked.
He said nothing.
My mother screamed from across the yard.
"You were supposed to be at work!
This wasn't supposed to happen today!"
That one sentence told me everything.
They had picked Frederick's birthday on purpose.
They knew I'd be at the job site until evening.
They had a window.
And they almost made it.
I turned back to the officer.
"How far along is this?
Is the transfer legal?"
He looked at the document carefully.
"It depends on when it was filed.
We'll need to verify."
Then one of the other officers walked over holding something else — a phone.
Mason's phone.
He had been trying to delete something when they stopped him.
The officer turned the screen toward me.
It was a text thread.
Between Mason and someone I didn't recognize.
The last message read:
*"Once it's done, cut Connor off completely.
He won't be able to fight it."*
My hands were shaking.
Because the contact name at the top of that thread wasn't Teresa.
It was someone else entirely.
Someone I had trusted even more.
