Chapter 2: The Photograph in the Envelope

Dad unfolded the document, but George reached for it.
“Robert, don’t do this here.”
Dad pulled it away.
“You lost the right to ask me for silence when your family humiliated my son.”
Fiona and Beverly appeared in the doorway.
“Dad,” Fiona whispered, “why do you know him?”
George ignored her.
His eyes remained fixed on the paper.
I stepped closer and saw my mother’s name printed across the top.
My hands began to shake.
“Why is Mom’s name on that document?”
Dad looked at me with tears in his eyes.
“Because George and I weren’t strangers, Daniel.
We built the first Henderson company together.”
Beverly stared at her husband.
“You told me Robert vanished after the company failed.”
“No,” Dad said.
“George made certain everyone believed I had vanished.”
George’s voice hardened.
“Be careful.
You’ll destroy both our families.”
“Your family?” Dad replied.
“My wife paid the price for what you did.”
Fiona covered her mouth.
I grabbed Dad’s arm.
“What did he do to Mom?”
Before Dad could answer, Thomas opened another envelope and removed an old photograph.
It showed my parents beside a younger George—and a woman I recognized as Beverly.
On the back, someone had written: *George knows the truth.
Never let Daniel trust him.*
Then Beverly looked at the photograph and whispered, “Robert, Daniel can never know what happened that night.”
