Chapter 2: The Night the Lights Went Out

The SUV moved through the storm in silence.
Claire didn't look back again.
She opened her phone and found forty-seven unread messages — all from the same thread.
Senior partners.
Board members.
Legal.
Every name her father had trusted.
Daniel Mercer had sent one final message at 11:58 p.m.
*The Harrington Development financing agreement is ready for review.
Your signature suspends the entire project.
Shall we proceed?*
Claire typed two words.
*Proceed.
Tonight.*
Back at the estate, the celebration had already started.
Margaret poured champagne.
Brooke laughed at something Ethan said.
The divorce papers sat neatly on the coffee table beside Claire's wedding ring.
Margaret lifted her glass.
"To better decisions."
Ethan didn't drink.
He was still staring at the window.
"She knew everything," he said quietly.
"She knew about Sterling Capital.
She knew about the Langham.
She knew about the attorney."
Margaret waved her hand.
"It doesn't matter now."
"How did she know, Mother?"
Brooke set her glass down slowly.
Margaret's smile held — but something behind her eyes shifted.
Then Ethan's phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
The voice on the other end said four words that made the color leave his face.
"Harrington Development is suspended."
Margaret stopped smiling.
"What did you say?"
Ethan looked at her.
"The financing.
It's gone."
