The officer watched the footage twice without saying a word.
Then he turned to Ryan.
"Sir, this is a clear case of domestic @ssault.
We'll need a full statement."
Ryan's face went white.
"It was a misunderstanding.
She provoked her."
I laughed.
I couldn't help it.
"Provoked her?
I was standing at the kitchen sink."
Diane sat in the corner with her arms crossed.
No tears.
No apology.
Just that same cold look she'd worn for three years every time Ryan wasn't watching.
The officer asked me to step outside with him.
"Mrs.
Callahan," he said quietly, "this isn't the first report from this address."
I stopped.
"What?"
He hesitated.
"There was a call logged eight months ago.
No charges were filed." He looked at me carefully.
"The caller gave your name."
My stomach dropped.
Someone had called the police about this house eight months ago — and used my name.
But I never made that call.
I turned back toward the door.
Through the glass, I could see Ryan leaning close to Diane, whispering something fast.
She nodded once.
Then she looked straight at me and smiled.
