Chapter 2: The Name That Changed Everything

I put the phone on speaker and set it on the table.

The dining room went completely still.

Even Emma stopped crying.

My father's voice came through calm and clear, the way it always did when he had already made a decision.

"Linda.

This is Richard Bennett.

I believe you just struck my daughter."

Linda's smile disappeared.

She looked at the phone, then at Daniel, then back at the phone.

"I don't know who you think you are," she said slowly, "but this is a private family matter."

"It stopped being private the moment you put your hand on my child," Dad said.

"Daniel knows exactly who I am.

I'd like him to explain it to you."

Every head at the table turned toward Daniel.

He didn't speak.

He just stood there, gripping the back of his chair, his face the color of ash.

"Daniel." My father's voice was quieter now, which somehow made it worse.

"Tell your mother who I am."

The silence lasted four full seconds.

Then Melissa whispered something to her husband, and I watched his expression change completely.

He pushed back from the table and stood up.

"Linda," he said carefully.

"I think you should listen to him."

Linda turned on him.

"Excuse me?"

"Richard Bennett." Her son-in-law's voice dropped.

"Linda, that's Richard Bennett."

Linda looked at Daniel one more time.

And for the first time in five years, I watched her face go pale.

She finally understood.

But she had no idea how much worse it was about to get.
