Chapter 2: The Name on the Second Document

My father-in-law spread the documents across the table one by one.

Nobody touched them.

My husband finally reached for the top page.

His hand stopped halfway.

"What is this?" he said.

"Read it," his father said.

My mother-in-law snatched the page first.

Her eyes moved fast across the lines.

Then slower.

Then she set it down without a word.

"This can't be right," she said.

"It's been right for eleven years," my father-in-law said.

"You just never asked."

I still hadn't moved.

My hand was wrapped in a dish towel.

My cheek was still burning.

And I was standing there watching a family discover something they should have known a long time ago.

My husband looked up at me.

"Did you know about this?"

I almost laughed.

"I found out three weeks ago," I said.

"I was going to tell you.

Then tonight happened."

His mother's voice came sharp and fast.

"She's lying.

She planned this.

She's been working with him against us."

My father-in-law turned to her slowly.

"She didn't plan anything.

I did."

The room went completely still.

"And there's a second document at the bottom of that envelope," he said.

"That one has your name on it."

He was looking directly at his wife.

Her face changed in a way I had never seen before.

Like something she had hidden for years had just walked into the room.
