Chapter 2: The Envelope on the Table

Everyone froze.
My mother-in-law's smile disappeared so fast it was like someone had switched off a light.
My husband stood up slowly.
"Dad, what are you talking about?"
His father didn't look at him.
He was still looking at me — at my burned hand, at the ring on the table.
He set the envelope down in front of my husband and stepped back.
"Open it," he said quietly.
My husband pulled out the papers inside.
I watched his face change.
The color drained from it completely.
"This can't be right," he whispered.
His mother snatched the papers from him.
Her eyes moved fast across the page.
Then she looked up at her husband — not at me, not at her son.
Just at him.
"You didn't," she said.
"I did," he replied.
"Three years ago.
After the first time you did something like this to her."
The room was completely silent.
Even the children had stopped moving.
Then my mother-in-law did something no one expected.
She turned to me — and for the first time in seven years, she looked almost afraid.
"Emily," she started.
But her husband raised one hand and stopped her.
"She doesn't have to listen to you anymore," he said.
"Not in her own house."
My husband was still staring at the papers.
Then he looked at me — and I saw something in his eyes I had never seen before.
